臺灣地區過去三十多年來由於訊速工業化、教育、科技、交通的進步發展、經濟繁榮、以及醫療發達,導致國民所得增加、國民平均壽命延長、死亡率降低、教育機會普遍提高等，但另一方面由於人口的增加，主要死亡原因的變化人口湧向都市、大城市人口密度驟增、家庭成員結構的改變、人際關係的變化，使國民處於必須適應不斷變遷的生活環境,增加其社會心理壓力。
英文摘要:
The purpose of this research is to differentiate the possible factors leading of relevant to the way either to instutionalization or de-institutionalization. Three samples of chronic schizophrenic patients were matched and selected in the past three years, two of which had received long-term institutionalized care (LHT, N=112, and JAH, N=117); and the third had stayed in the community and received mainly ambulatory psychiatric care (KMC, N=106).
