Purpose: This paper reviews the literature on sexual offending risk factors and sexual offending theories, proposes 4 predictive models, and compares them via path analysis. The purpose of this paper is to study the underlying triggering and inhibiting factors to sexual offending and violent assault. Methods: A total of 139 sexual offenders (all males, mean age=35.87) completed aninventory based on the 4 predictive models. Six manifest variables were derived and statistically analyzed. These were self-esteem tendency, self-control trait, negative mood regulation, empathy, index of sexual offending, and index of violent assault. Results: The fit indices and the tests of path coefficients of the alternative models were compared. The results revealed that two of the four alternative models were consistent with predictive theories of sexual offending. Conclusions: Self-control trait and negative mood regulation were found to be directly associated withthe sexual offender's violent assault, while empathy and self-esteem tendency were indirectly associated. The findings illustrate the importance of psychological vulnerabilities and the confluence model ofsexual offenders' violence and sexual assault.
